Three key project priorities:

About

The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū is Nelson’s public art gallery and one of New Zealand’s oldest cultural institutions. Since 1899, The Suter has been a taonga for our community, a place where art connects people across generations, sparks ideas, and offers inspiration and reflection. Today, The Suter is a small organisation delivering far more than our size and budget suggest. We curate exhibitions that bring nationally significant and internationally recognised art to Nelson, while also providing a platform for local and emerging artists. We care for a collection that reflects our region’s history and creativity. And we deliver hands-on programmes to thousands of tamariki and rangatahi every year, many encountering art for the first time.

We are proud of what we achieve, but it takes significant effort and resource to deliver at this level. Like many cultural organisations, we’re stretched. Costs rise, funding is uncertain, and yet expectations grow. What keeps us moving is our commitment to this community and the belief that Nelson Tasman deserves a gallery that punches above its weight. The Suter is also an anchor in Nelson’s city centre. Our presence brings families, students, visitors, and locals into the CBD, supporting vibrancy, hospitality, and business. A thriving gallery contributes directly to a revitalised city, where people want to live, work, and play. Looking ahead, our focus is on deepening impact and raising ambition. We want our programming to be as diverse and dynamic as the people who walk through our doors. We aim to grow a stronger community of members and supporters, expand our education programme to reach more young people, and make every visit seamless and welcoming. Achieving this requires facilities that are fit for purpose — from gallery spaces to our theatre — so we can continue serving the region at the highest level.

Above all, our vision is to secure The Suter’s place as both a destination of national importance and a gallery recognised for being bold, innovative, and exciting. The Suter has always been more than a gallery. It is a meeting place, a classroom, a stage, and a cultural heart for Nelson. With philanthropic support, we can keep it that way, and grow its impact for the next generation.
