Cawthron Institute
Environment, Science & Innovation · Young People · Institutions
Three key project priorities:
Restoring Freshwater and Coastal Ecosystems – research and community projects that help reverse biodiversity loss and enhance ecological health.
Low-Carbon Food and Aquaculture – pioneering sustainable, nutritious food systems from land and sea, securing food for future generations.
Inspiring the Next Generation – scholarships, school programmes and community science initiatives to ignite curiosity and grow tomorrow’s scientists.
About
Cawthron Institute was born of Nelson generosity. In 1915, local businessman and philanthropist Thomas Cawthron bequeathed the equivalent of more than $100 million today to establish a technical institute that would use science to strengthen communities and industries. Officially opened in 1921, Cawthron has grown into Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation, owned by a charitable trust and proudly based in Nelson for more than a century.
Our purpose is simple yet powerful: to deliver breakthrough science that supports healthy ecosystems, a prosperous blue economy, and thriving communities. Nearly 300 scientists, technicians, and support staff from over 30 countries choose Nelson as their home to carry forward this mission. Every day, their discoveries advance sustainable aquaculture, protect waterways, and safeguard food systems.
Impact in Nelson and Te Tauihu
Cawthron is deeply rooted in this community. We host school science expos, provide scholarships and mentoring for young researchers, run public lectures and open days, and partner with local iwi and industries – always with the aim of inspiring the next generation of scientists. Our research protects Nelson’s coastal waters, underpins sustainable mussel and salmon farming, and helps local industries respond to climate change and biodiversity loss. We have also brought world-class infrastructure to Nelson, including the Cawthron Aquaculture Park, the National Algae Research Centre, and specialist laboratories that attract international collaboration and investment. By investing in Cawthron’s Foundation, philanthropists also invest directly in the resilience, prosperity, and wellbeing of Nelson’s people.
Overcoming Challenges
In recent years, Cawthron has had to reduce reliance on government funding, navigate global competition for talent, and respond to the realities of climate change. We have met these challenges by diversifying funding streams, sharpening our focus on science that directly benefits communities, and finding innovative ways to deliver greater impact, faster.
Thomas Cawthron’s vision was for science to uplift community. More than a century later, his legacy continues in Nelson. With your support, we can do more, faster, to protect the places we love and ensure our ecosystems and communities thrive.
