About
The Adam Chamber Music Festival, held biennially in Whakatū Nelson, is New Zealand’s only international chamber music festival and a cultural event of national significance. For more than three decades, it has been celebrated for artistic excellence, presenting world-class programmes that unite leading international and New Zealand musicians. Past performers have included the New Zealand String Quartet, Goldner String Quartet, Martin Roscoe, Dénes Várjon, and the Takács Quartet, alongside emerging talents and acclaimed local artists. Its intimate concerts, bold programming, and spirit of collaboration create an experience unlike any other in the country.
The Festival’s reach and impact extend well beyond the concert hall. The most recent event generated $4.2 million in economic return for the Nelson region, benefiting local businesses, hospitality, and tourism. It attracts audiences from across Aotearoa and the world—25% from overseas and 42% from elsewhere in New Zealand—with many extending their stay to enjoy the region’s vibrant arts scene, renowned vineyards, and iconic landscapes.
Equally important is the Festival’s commitment to the future of music. Through masterclasses, workshops, and outreach programmes, it nurtures young talent and inspires the next generation of performers and audiences. As the nation’s only international chamber music festival, it enriches lives, strengthens community pride, and positions Nelson as a destination for world-class music.
