About
For more than 160 years, Y-Nelson has been at the heart of our region, committed to building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. Guided by our mission to enhance well-being through meaningful programmes, we remain grounded in the values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility.
Each year, we reach hundreds of families through YKids Early Learning, OSCAR out-of-school care, and the Nelson Training Centre. YKids maintained more than 80% occupancy in 2023/24, providing quality education and full pay parity for kaiako. Our OSCAR programmes rebounded strongly, recording more than 15,000 bookings across four school sites and holiday programmes, consistently running near or above capacity. Meanwhile, the Nelson Training Centre awarded 14 qualifications and served over 4,000 meals while equipping rangatahi with skills and confidence for further study or employment.
Our resilience has been tested in the post-COVID landscape, but through prudent management and community partnerships, Y-Nelson continues to thrive.
Looking ahead, our priorities are clear: to grow early childhood education numbers by 50%, expand OSCAR programmes into more schools and holiday offerings, and extend youth development initiatives that build skills and work readiness. Together with our community, we are shaping a stronger future for Nelson.
