About
Te Whare Ma was founded 27 years ago by people with lived experience of mental health services, who felt alienated by the mental health system. Originally called "The White House" because it was white and to reflect a place of power (like that in the US), it was created as a peer-led space where members could make decisions for themselves—Tino Rangatiratanga in action.
Today, Te Whare Ma remains a peer-led, open-door community hub supporting those facing mental distress, addiction, homelessness, and involvement with the justice system. Everyone who walks through our doors becomes part of our whānau.
We offer a safe, alcohol- and drug-free space, open 365 days a year. Whānau can access essential services including showers, laundry, computers, and subsidised meals.
Our kaupapa focuses on connection, confidence, and recovery. Through peer support and structured daily activities, we help build life skills and a sense of belonging.
With philanthropic support, we can grow this vital mahi: expanding programmes for those navigating the justice system, increasing our food supply to meet rising demand, and offering more group activities that support mental wellness, build confidence, and reduce isolation. Every contribution helps us provide a stable, empowering environment where people can reconnect, recover, and move forward with purpose.
