WAA! Club and Micro-venue
Arts, Culture & Heritage · Young People · Community & Belonging · Charities
Three key project priorities:
Security of tenure - a long-term community lease or purchased space. Including Filling the black-box theatre gap identified in Council's own He Tātai Whetū strategy.
Supporting up-and-coming artists - practice rooms, basic recording studio, craft and art fairs, electronic and alternative music training, and an instrument library.
Deeper community reach – within Whakatū's Māori, Pacifika, immigrant and street culture communities. Helping to keep our young makers, musicians, and misfits here and inspired.
About
WAA! was created by community, with community, for community. A self-funded, all-ages micro-venue and clubhouse in central Whakatū Nelson, run entirely by volunteers, with no bar profits and no operating subsidies. It's a genuine third space - open to anyone creating outside the mainstream: intimate gigs, stand-up comedy, Nelson Live Poetry, a community choir, repair café, youth groups, games and craft nights, all kept accessible so cost is never the reason someone misses out.
WAA! is home for all the avant-garde, indie and niche tours - local, national and international.
