About

Nelson Environment Centre: 50 Years of Treading Lightly, Acting Boldly

For nearly 50 years, Nelson Environment Centre (NEC) has been a catalyst for change—transforming waste into resources, surplus into sustenance, and knowledge into action. From food rescue to e-waste, building materials to textiles, we deliver practical, people-powered solutions to environmental and social challenges across Whakatū and beyond.

Our Kai Rescue programme alone diverts over 260 tonnes of edible food from landfill each year, distributing it to over 50 schools, kindergartens, and community organisations across Te Tauihu. That’s nourishment, dignity, and climate action—delivered in every box.

Right now, demand is rising while resources are stretched. We need your help to keep Kai Rescue on the road. Please donate today—every dollar helps us put good food where it’s needed most.

As we approach our 50th anniversary, we’re looking to the future. Join us. Donate today. Be part of the next 50 years of local environmental action.
