About

Maranga || Rise Up is a 10-month kaupapa Māori programme for tāne aged 18–30. Participants attend monthly noho wānanga grounded in three cornerstones: Te Ao Māori, Outdoor Activities and Life Skills,  and receive ongoing support from kaimahi between gatherings.

Maranga || Rise Up offers a positive pathway for those who may feel lost, disconnected, or at risk of harmful choices. For tāne not in work or education, the programme provides belonging and purpose - reducing vulnerability to drugs, crime, or gang involvement.

The programme nurtures identity, self-awareness, and healthy masculinity. Tāne explore their place in the world, build confidence, address insecurities, and connect deeply with te taiao, marae, and tikanga Māori. Each participant identifies personal goals and is mentored toward achieving them.

Born from the combined strengths of Te Hurihanga (an adventure-based life skills programme for young people in the justice system) and Te Rōpū Taitama (a marae-based identity and tikanga wānanga), the outcomes have been remarkable. Participants report higher self-esteem, stronger connection, healthier habits, and reduced substance use. Many have moved into employment or further study.

Empowered in their identity as Māori, tāne are living with purpose and are less likely to enter the health, welfare or justice systems.
