About
Since our inception in 1996, Habitat for Humanity Nelson has been committed to building homes and communities that are great places to live. Guided by clear values and a people-centred approach, we take pride in offering programmes that improve access to affordable housing across the Nelson–Tasman region.
Our rental and homeownership programmes strengthen communities by enabling families the opportunity to put down roots, build stability, and form connections through local schools, clubs, and community groups. Designed to have a cumulative impact, funds from the Progressive Home Ownership programme are continually reinvested into building more homes and stronger, more resilient communities.
Soon, we will begin work on an exciting new development of affordable rental townhouses and apartments on Rutherford Street. This project will deliver a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom homes, with ground-floor units designed to meet accessibility standards. A shared green space with communal amenities will provide a focal point for residents, encouraging connection and wellbeing. Rutherford Street is a showcase of what Habitat Nelson can achieve by working alongside like-minded partners to create transformational, lasting change in our city.
In Nelson South, our Tipahi Street development is already underway, with four townhouses being built through our Progressive Home Ownership programme. Families are expected to move in by the end of the year. Looking ahead, we are also preparing for a 10-home development in Richmond, with site works planned to begin in 2026.
Our ability to scale up delivery—through projects such as Rutherford Street—has been made possible through our strong partnerships with funders. We are proud to work with organisations who share our commitment to improving access to affordable homes in Nelson. Income from our ReStore charity shops, through generous donations and the work of volunteers, contributes to running the Habitat Hub and supporting our housing development programme.
At Habitat Nelson, we believe housing is more than just bricks and mortar. It is the foundation for wellbeing, opportunity, and thriving communities. Together, we can ensure Nelson remains a place where everyone has the chance to live, work, and belong.
