Compost Club

Environment, Science & Innovation · Community & Belonging · Charities

Three key project priorities:

Project 1 – Short term  (0-12 months) Electric Collection Van - $65,000

Replace our very old diesel van with a new “LDV eDeliver 3” fully electric model to service CBD food-waste collections and compost deliveries.

Project 2 – Medium Term (12-24 months) New Compost Club Site - $20,000

Establish a second composting site of 6 compost cages and tools, to improve efficiency, expand our volunteer base and widen our community impact.

Project 3 – Long term (5 years)  Sponsor a Compost Cage (Legacy Programme)

Per cage: $2,500 (build, install, plaque acknowledgement)

Leave a lasting legacy of healthy soil. Each cage displays a durable plaque with a tribute written by the sponsor. Over five years we will retire older cages and add 20 upgraded units across our sites, strengthening Compost Club’s teaching space and CBD service.

About

Compost Club is a Nelson charity bringing people together each week to craft living compost and build community resilience. Our free Saturday workshops at Brook Waimārama Community Gardens teach best-practice hot composting, turn maturing heaps, and nourish local soils, with around 10 volunteers taking part. Powered by food scraps collected locally, we transform “waste” into nutrient-rich compost for home and community gardens. We serve households and businesses in Nelson’s CBD, supporting a vibrant, low-waste city centre. Over six years, more than 624 tonnes of kitchen waste have been diverted from landfill through our network, supported by many locals and 120+ regular collection customers.

Innovation underpins this mahi. We embrace methods that make urban composting cleaner, safer and scalable, including trials of locally designed bEartha in-vessel composter adapted for our teaching gardens. With philanthropic support, we will grow our education programmes, train more volunteers boosting capacity so more households and businesses can join our circular, low-waste movement. We are cultivating healthy soils and thriving gardens - one hot heap at a time.
