Coastguard Nelson is a 100% volunteer-run organisation dedicated to one simple mission: Saving Lives at Sea. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, our crew respond to emergencies across one of the largest Coastguard operational areas in New Zealand – stretching from Stephens Island, around Farewell Spit, and down to Kahurangi Point.

In the last year alone, our crew of 44 passionate volunteers dedicated 5,172 hours to serving their local community. They responded to 43 incidents on the water, assisting 108 boaties in need. Back on land, our volunteers spent 69 hours on radio watch, 2460 hours training, 277 hours to maintaining our vessel, 65 hours fundraising vital funds and 1292 hours completing necessary administrative tasks. This behind the scene mahi is essential to keeping our unit running, our people safe and our assets in good working order.  Whether it’s search and rescue, breakdown assistance, or medical evacuations from remote coastal areas, our team is there when the community needs us most.

While we receive some government support, the majority of our operating costs – including fuel, equipment, training, and crew welfare – rely on donations, sponsorship, and community fundraising. Every contribution helps ensure we can keep our rescue vessel, Hohapata Sealord Rescue, ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

Coastguard Nelson is proud to be part of the Nelson Tasman community and grateful for the ongoing support that allows us to continue this vital life-saving service.
