About
The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary is a 690-hectare fenced Sanctuary just minutes from Nelson city, providing a safe haven for some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most threatened native wildlife.
After more than 20 years of conservation effort, the Sanctuary is now seeing significant results, with thriving populations of kiwi pukupuku, kākāriki karaka/orange-fronted parakeet, kākā, tuatara and other native species.
Through predator control, habitat restoration, species translocations, research and community involvement, the Sanctuary is helping restore native wildlife and ecosystems within the Brook Valley.
The Sanctuary is also a place for people to connect with nature, offering walking tracks, guided experiences, education programmes and opportunities to see conservation in action.
This work is made possible through the dedication of our volunteers, supporters, partners and philanthropic donors. Their support is vital in helping us continue this important conservation work and create a lasting legacy for future generations.
Our vision is to be a nationally recognised eco-sanctuary where wildlife, education and research flourish, inspiring our community and visitors to help protect Aotearoa’s unique natural heritage.
